Why is this medication prescribed?
Metoprolol is in a class of medications called beta blockers. It works by slowing the heart rate and relaxing the blood vessels so the heart does not have to pump as hard.
This medication is used alone or in combination with other medications to treat high blood pressure, to prevent angina (chest pain) and to treat heart attacks. Moreover, extended-release (long-acting) metoprolol is also used in combination with other medications to treat heart failure.
It is marketed under the brand name Lopresor® by Novartis, and Toprol® (in the USA), Seleken® or Selokeen® (elsewhere), Betaloc® by AstraZeneca, and as Corvitol® by Berlin-Chemie AG. Generic brands marketed in the Australasian region include Minax® by Alphapharm, Metrol® by Arrow and Metohexal® under Hexal.
